🛡️ Safety & Code Compliance
Built, tested, and verified for safety & compliance
This article brings together the key info your facilities, safety, and accessibility teams usually ask for when they’re evaluating Zenbooth for a space.
📂 Compliance Considerations
Because permitting and code requirements vary a lot by building and location, your first stop should always be your building or facility management team. They’re the ones who can tell you:
- Whether a permit is required
- If seismic anchoring is needed
- What your fire/life safety and accessibility standards are on site
Zenbooth’s role is to give you clear, accurate product information so your own experts can do their jobs confidently.
We can provide:
- Product guides and the Compliance Packet, which includes fire safety info, structural and installation specs, ventilation details, and other documentation commonly requested for permitting or internal approvals
- Details on fire options (Fire Suppression Unit, ceiling punch-out for building sprinklers)
- Electrical, acoustic, and accessibility information for each model
We’re always happy to answer questions about what our booths are designed to do and how they’re built, and to point you to the right documents. For anything that counts as an official code decision, please consult your engineers, facility managers, and local authorities.
✅ Safety Certifications & Construction
Zenbooths are tested and certified as commercial furniture with integrated electrical, using durable materials suited for everyday use.
🔌 ETL / UL 962 Certification
All Zenbooth models are ETL Listed to UL 962, the safety standard for:
- Commercial furnishings with integrated electrical components
- Electrical, fire, and mechanical safety
In plain terms, that means Zenbooths have been independently tested by Intertek for electrical, fire, and construction safety, and every model meets the strict requirements for commercial use.
This certification is recognized and accepted by inspectors, code officials, and facility managers nationwide. You can download our Certificate of Compliance, and you’ll also find the ETL label right on the booth.
This is often the key certification facilities, risk, and procurement teams look for when evaluating furniture systems.
🔥 Fire Code, Sprinklers & Fire Suppression
As freestanding furniture, Zenbooths work in most spaces without extra fire measures, and there are clear options available if your fire marshal or building requires more.
🧯 Fire Readiness Options
Zenbooth offers two main paths to support fire safety inside the booth when required by your local code authority - typically the Fire Marshal, building official, or safety reviewer:
1️⃣ Zenbooth Fire Suppression Unit
A compact, self-contained fire suppression unit designed for use inside the booth.
- Heat-activated, deploying a fire suppression material inside the space.
- Your fire protection contractor can design how it interacts with your building’s fire alarm system, if needed.
Key details:
- Ships directly from the manufacturer, so its lead time may differ from your booths.
- Must be installed by a qualified contractor (for example, your building’s fire protection vendor or general contractor).
- Zenbooth does not install the Fire Suppression Unit, but we provide manufacturer documentation / video to guide your contractor.
2️⃣ Using Your Building’s Sprinkler System Inside a Booth
All current Zenbooth models include a designated ceiling punch-out that can be used if your fire protection engineer designs a sprinkler head to extend into the booth.
- The punch-out is a marked location in the ceiling that can be opened on-site.
- A sprinkler head from your building’s system can then be installed through that opening.
Design and installation are handled by your licensed fire protection contractor, with review and approval by your local code authority.
💧 Sprinkler Clearance & Obstruction
Common themes your team will look at:
- Maintain at least 18" of clear space beneath sprinkler heads.
- Structures wider than 4 feet may require extra attention for sprinkler coverage.
How that applies to Zenbooths:
- Zenbooth Solo: Footprint under 4' × 4', often treated more like furniture from an obstruction standpoint.
- Zenbooth Duo & Quad: Wider than 4 ft; your local code authority may consider them obstructions and decide whether in-booth or adjacent sprinklers are appropriate.
Your building engineer and fire marshal will decide which approach is appropriate for your project using the available options (Fire Suppression Unit, ceiling punch-out, or both).
🚨 Alarms, Egress & Visibility
When you place Zenbooths, make sure they do not:
- Block exit signs or alarm strobes
- Severely muffle audible alarms
- Reduce egress path widths below code minimums
When placed thoughtfully and in normal use, alarms remain audible and visible through the glass door and ceiling. We recommend installing the Zenbooths so that visual alarms are clearly visible through the door or through the skylight so they can be seen by those with hearing impairments.
Your facilities or life-safety team should check booth locations against:
- Egress and life-safety drawings
- Exit sign sightlines
- Any local requirements for your occupancy type (office, education, healthcare, etc.)
🧱 Materials & Flammability
- Where flammability ratings apply, Zenbooth materials are Class C or better.
- Booths are freestanding, modular furniture, not permanent walls.
- Built with commercial-grade finishes and acoustic interior materials for everyday use.
Please note, how your building and local authorities classify the Zenbooths (furniture, obstruction, prefabricated enclosure, etc.) may vary.
🔌 Electrical & Power
🔋 Power Requirements
All Zenbooth models are designed to be plug-and-play:
- Connect to a standard 120V, three-prong outlet.
- Require no hardwiring.
- Draw no power when unoccupied.
- Draw roughly 0.1 amps (less than a 60W lightbulb) for lighting and ventilation when the occupancy sensor is triggered, plus whatever devices users plug in.
Each booth includes an integrated power unit with a cord of about 10 ft. We recommend leaving around 4 inches of space behind the booth so the fan can draw air without impediment, the back panel can be accessed for maintenance, and the cord can route to an outlet.
All integrated power components are UL-listed and part of Zenbooth's UL 962 listing.
⚡ Outlets, USB & Cable Management
Inside the booth, you’ll typically find:
- (2) 15A 120V outlets
- (1) USB and (1) USB-C fast-charging port
- An occupancy sensor that automatically controls lighting and ventilation
For IT and AV teams:
- A wire passthrough grommet in the rear fan assembly allows data or additional power cables to be routed into the booth while keeping things tidy.
